Best luxury hotels in Basel 2021

Often overlooked as a short-stay choice, the Swiss city has a lot to offer. It sits on the Rhine, with a plethora of art galleries, museums, opera houses and theaters, as well as historic sites. Basel is cosmopolitan but traditional, with an exciting emerging art scene alongside its more classic offerings. It hosts an autumn fair, Christmas market, and spring carnival, with wild river swimming being a popular summer pastime. Families will enjoy the indoor water park, zoo, and scavenger hunts, with beer tastings, tours, and shopping galore that will delight adults. Here are our favorite hotels for a stay in Basel.

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois

Savor fine dining with three Michelin stars in this hotel’s destination restaurant, where chef Peter Knogl presents deeply elegant and surprising edible works of art – Cheval Blanc is considered one of the top 100 restaurants in the world. Swiss and French specialties are also served in the Brasserie, with drinks at the men’s club-style bar, or at the Salon Du Cigare. 101 rooms include a rooftop suite, a riverside Napoleon suite, and more standard town rooms (though even in these you’ll feel like you’re sleeping in a grand stately home). The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is actually one of the oldest hotels in Europe – Empress Michiko of Japan, James Joyce and Pablo Picasso all stayed there – a piece of living history.

Krafft Basel

This late 19th century hotel is very modern in comparison. The ultra-cool five-story Rhine property is designed to be relaxing and hassle-free, yet luxurious. 48 individually decorated rooms are contemporary, comfortable and cozy, with L’Occitane bathroom products. Guests can enjoy refined and hearty hot dishes in the herringbone-floor dining room next to the hotel’s river promenade. Or enjoy fresh, light lunches on the summer terrace and drinks under the stars in the evening. Private dinners for up to eight people can be arranged in the stylish and bright Rhybligg Room.

The Basel Passage

Opt for a city-center stay in the four-star Passage. It is so named because of its location between the old and new towns of Basel. The central location is convenient (especially since there is no hotel restaurant) but will not interfere with a good night’s sleep thanks to the soundproofing of the 46 rooms. The designer accommodation merges Mid-Century and Scandi style, with trendy elements and LED lighting. Clarins toiletries are provided for all guests and those in the loft apartments have their own kitchenette and balcony. An organic breakfast is served daily in the lobby or on the patio, with drinks during the day or in the evening at the bar.
