(Bloomberg) – Thousands of hotel rooms in Qatar that were previously blocked by 2022 FIFA World Cup organizers are being made available to the general public for booking, even though some properties are still under construction less than two months before kick-off.

The accommodations had been shortlisted by the Supreme Committee of Qatar and governing body FIFA to prioritize competition teams, sponsors and their guests, officials, royal guests and fans who had booked packages of hospitality. Now, with the World Cup due to start on November 20, several thousand unassigned rooms are being released after a contractually agreed deadline, according to a person familiar with the process.

Hotel executives said more rooms would become available in early October, which would ease the crisis. “The availability picture will become much, much broader,” Guy Hutchinson, president and CEO of Rotana Hotel Management Corp., said in an interview. “A lot of these concerns will be answered in the very short term.” He expects occupancy of his properties to be 90% or more for the duration of the tournament.

A Qatari spokesperson said it was on track to provide 130,000 rooms for the tournament and more than 117,000 rooms are currently available. Accommodation options include purpose-built accommodations, tents, Airbnb-style accommodations, and at least two cruise ships with nearly 4,000 cabins.

The country and its largely immigrant workforce have been working tirelessly to prepare the country, including an overhaul of sewage systems to handle the estimated 1.2 million fans coming for the event of a month. The bulk of visitors will come in the first two weeks of the tournament, with many entering and leaving on the same day, staying in neighboring countries like the United Arab Emirates. Qatar has reopened a secondary airport to the public to cope with an increase in flights.

Stadiums, mostly built from scratch, are complete. But at least half a dozen hotels, including five-star establishments, are still under construction with the aim of completing the work by November 1. Some plan to open all of their rooms and restaurants, while others will only have a portion of their rooms available in time for the tournament.

Some of the so-called fan villages – including rows and rows of rapidly built housing resembling mobile homes or shipping containers visible from the air – are still being worked on.

The official tournament website still indicates very limited availability in hotel rooms for the first few nights before teams are eliminated.

However, more rooms are available on individual hotel booking sites. The new Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha, for example, recently started taking bookings for the tournament. It opens the all-inclusive property on October 23, with rooms available on its website starting at 3,570 Qatari riyals ($980.50) and going up to 33,320 riyals per night for the most luxurious suite.

There are many private houses – called villas – available from 787 riyals per night, as well as apartments and properties that offer hostel-style twin-bedded studios for 300 riyals per night. Tents and other space in fan villages are also available for between 407 and 1512 riyals per night, with a minimum stay of two nights.

SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Yonhap) — Leading accommodation booking app Good Choice, better known as “Yeogiotte” in Korean, has been ordered by a court to pay up to 400,000 won ($280 ) per person to 300 customers who suffered information leak damages, forensic officials said Friday.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled on Thursday that Good Choice Company (GCC), the operator of the hotel booking platform of the same name, should pay compensation to 300 customers whose booking details and information personal data, including phone numbers, were leaked in a hacking incident five years ago.

The court set the amount of compensation between 50,000 and 400,000 won per person, depending on the extent of the damage. He said the defendant failed to comply with the technical protection measures of the web server of his marketing center, which processes personal data of customers.

In March 2017, booking details and personal information of approximately 970,000 GCC users were leaked online by hackers. The hackers then sent about 4,000 threatening and obscene texts to GCC users based on the stolen information and posted about 5,000 pieces of personal information on social media.

In response, 312 users launched a class action lawsuit demanding compensation of 1-3 million won per person. The court dismissed or denied compensation claims from 12 of them who failed to prove damage caused by leaks of personal information.

After booking a surprisingly affordable suite at the Mi-Pad Hotel on New Zealand’s South Island, Miriam Moore was shocked and amused by what she found.

Instead of a sweeping panorama of Wakatipu, she found the room had a TV feed from a rooftop camera view, New Zealand Herald reports.

Ms Moore said she and a friend booked the listing on the promise of ‘mountain view, lake view, city view’ for their lakeside stay.

His guess was that it must be referring to the video feed from the television, as the only window looked out onto the road at the back.

After booking online, she was attracted by the promise of the view. “Fair play for them,” she wrote.

The hotel’s website describes rooms as modern with “options for Remarkables Scenic Mountains or Picturesque Lake Wakatipu Views” though that’s “(subject to availability)”.

For the first week of December, Airbnb has an average room rate of NZ$530 (A$460) per night in Queenstown, compared to NZ$300 (A$260) in Wanaka and Cromwell.

At between NZ$175 and NZ$199 (A$150 and A$175) per night, the rooftop camera might be a more economical option.

New research from InsureMyTrip reveals the hotel booking sites with the best travel deals.

With the costs of travel vacations soaring, many vacationers rely on hotel booking websites to save money.

InsureMyTrip, a travel insurance comparison site, looked at the data to determine which hotel booking site has the best deals for travelers.

The study compares the prices of 50 hotels in ten US cities and ten international cities, based on the destinations with the most international arrivals. Each destination is analyzed based on its daily rates found on Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com and the hotel’s official website. Searchers searched for a double room for two people for one night between August 27 and 28, 2022. All searches were done on the same day to avoid price fluctuations.

Sarah Webber, director of marketing at InsureMyTrip, hopes this study will inspire travelers to book a trip.

The high cost of travel can be daunting for Americans. We hope this data will encourage intentional travelers to take a trip, knowing they are getting the best prices on hotel rooms.

Research shows that Hotels.com is the most profitable option because it lists the cheapest accommodations. This platform offers a better deal than other websites in 289 cases. Expedia is cheaper in 283 cases, while direct bookings in 159 cases. Surprisingly, Booking.com is the least profitable option, offering a cheaper deal than other websites in only 54 cases. This represents only 7% of the hotels analyzed.

On average, using Expedia instead of Booking.com can save you $33.13. On Hotels.com the saving is $32.87 and if you book directly with the hotel you can save $27.28.

According to the study, the city with the least savings was Orlando. By booking through Expedia, travelers save an average of $23.82.

On the other hand, New York is the destination where travelers could save the most money. Over the past two years, hotel prices in the Big Apple have quadrupled, with an average room price of $318. However, visitors can save money if they book through the right website. On Booking.com, the average cost of a hotel room is $367, while on Hotels.com the average is $293, which is a savings of $74. The study found that Hotels.com offers the best deal in New York 62% of the time.

London is another city where hotel prices have risen significantly in recent years, with an average room price of $307. But even then, the price can vary greatly depending on the booking site you use.

Booking.com options in London have an average cost of $331, while Hotels.com and Expedia offer deals with an average cost of $286. These two sites are more profitable in 82% of cases.

The study also analyzed Dubai. The Gulf City is set to be a tourist hotspot in November, when neighboring Qatar hosts the FIFA World Cup. In Dubai, a hotel room costs an average of $143, but even then the price fluctuates depending on which hotel booking site you use. On Booking.com, the average room price is $166. On Expedia.com, a room costs an average of $34 cheaper, at $132.

Even in Singapore, using Expedia and Hotels.com to book a room can save you money. These websites both have an average room rate of $208 and show the most cost-effective option 78% of the time.
