An The Hermès Birkin bag just sold in the store for £29,840. There’s a bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild on the menu for £8,694 and Moët & Chandon champagne on tap. A seven-course tasting menu designed by a chef from a Michelin-starred restaurant will set you back £250. Still, it’s not a bling-bling Middle Eastern hotel. It’s the world’s newest cruise ship – sorry – superyacht: the Evrima from the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

The 298-passenger yacht, which founder and CEO Douglas Prothero swears is not an (all-too-common) cruise ship launched in October, 30 months behind schedule, having been delayed eight times. The Spanish shipyard’s financial difficulties, Covid and supply chain issues have resulted in the cancellation of cruises for hundreds of passengers. He is the first of a trio of ships from the hotel brand – and part of a wider trend that has upscale hotels branching out to sea.

Evrima will explore the most exclusive parts of the Caribbean

CHRISTOPHER CYPERT

Evrima has just crossed the Atlantic from Lisbon, where she was christened on November 5, to Barbados for a winter season exploring the most exclusive corners of the Caribbean, from the Iles des Saintes to Jost Van Dyke via Saint- Bartholomew.

Embarking on luxury ships takes on its full meaning for the hotel group. Ritz-Carlton not only has its own database of affluent customers to tap into, but also those of all the other high-end brands in the Marriott portfolio, from St Regis to W and Edition.

This means that 90% of bookings to date come from customers who have never sailed before – a figure other luxury lines can only dream of – and Evrima would be sailing at full capacity if supply issues had not delayed the completion of the larger suites.

The ship is beautifully appointed in sparkling marble and natural tones, with accents of blue, yellow and silver. There’s abstract art and curvy sculptures dotted around, much of it for sale, with the entire collection managed by an ‘art concierge’. The staterooms, all called suites, are larger than standard cruise ship rooms, with high ceilings and deep balconies, called terraces.

How to Sail a Superyacht at a Fraction of the Price
Castaway or the new wave – which cruising tribe are you?

There’s no buffet — heaven forbid — but instead five restaurants, one of which, SEA, is the first ocean adventure of Sven Elverfeld, chef at the three-Michelin-star restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg , in Germany. This is where passengers queue to sample the £250 wine tasting menu.

In a world where cruise ships are being built bigger and more bling-bling, superyachts such as Evrima are finding a new niche among passengers who can’t quite afford to charter – or don’t want to bother. to do so – but want a small ship experience with all the cachet of dropping anchor among the gin palaces off Hvar or St. Tropez.

One of the suites on board the Evrima

CHRISTOPHER CYPERT

Ritz-Carlton is the first hotel group to put its mark on a superyacht but its rivals are already snapping their heels. Four Seasons has announced its own entry into the small ship market with three yachts worth £1bn. The first 190-passenger ship, her lines inspired by Aristotle Onassis’ classic Christina O, will set sail in 2025, appears to be even splashier than Evrima, with the superior suite spanning four decks and a swimming pool with a floor which can be raised to create a dance floor or outdoor cinema. “When we launch in 2025, there will be nothing like it on the high seas,” says CEO Larry Pimentel, a cruise industry veteran. Echoing Prothero, Pimentel insists that Four Seasons Yachts is not a cruise line, but an “unprecedented luxury lifestyle project.”

There is more. The ultra-luxury hotel group Aman, with Saudi financing, is also launching in 2025 with the launch of “Project Sama” (Sanskrit for “tranquility”), a 600-foot megayacht with 50 suites, an Aman Spa with Japanese garden, two helipads and a Beach Club which will provide direct access to the water aft of the yacht. And German hotel group Seaside Collection, whose hotels include Finolhu on the Maldives’ Baa Atoll, has just acquired the luxury riverboat Crystal Mozart, arguably the fanciest ship on the Danube.

The ultra-luxury hotel group Aman will take the water in 2025

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN OF SINOT YACHTS

Mozart comes with a spacious spa and four restaurants, one of which will charge £260 for a tasting menu paired with wines. “River cruise ships are much closer to the luxury theme than ocean liners,” says owner Gregor Gerlach, who, like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Aman, plans to operate his own high-spend database instead. than nipping passengers from other cruise lines.

So who is likely to sail this new flotilla of superyachts? Evrima’s remarkably wealthy crowd at the christening ceremony in Lisbon looked younger than the conventional passengers of a luxury ship, including glamorous couples in their thirties and extremely well-dressed families with angelic children in outfits assorted (the yacht even has a kids’ club). Chilled out Aman attracts one by centers and celebrities – Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio and the Clooneys are all former guests – while Will Smith and Cindy Crawford are both known to favor Four Seasons resorts ashore.

Project Sama has an Aman spa with Japanese garden

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN OF SINOT YACHTS

Presumably, any of these A-listers would charter if they wanted to vacation at sea, or in Gates’ case, just sail their own yacht. What we know from the bar that Evrima has set up is that future guests will be happy to pay a minimum of £875 per person per night, book their stay with a few days at a Ritz- Carlton, or presumably an Aman Resort or a Four Seasons, and not wince at a dinner menu costing £250. As Prothero says, they’re not regular cruisers. Rather, they are the types who might rent a posh villa in Tuscany or take the whole family on a luxurious safari. So whatever you do, don’t call it a cruise ship.

What a difference a star or two makes.

Key points

  • Luxury hotels have several advantages over budget alternatives.
  • Although they cost a lot more, they can be worth it for the better experience they offer.
  • You can also use travel credit cards to book luxury points hotels and save money.

Travelers often wonder if they should splurge or save money on a hotel, and you get a mix of opinions on that. Some people like to stay in luxury hotels, i.e. four and five star properties. Others have a philosophy that they don’t travel to hang out in a hotel, so it’s best to opt for an affordable option.

I’ve stayed in just about every level of hotel, from ultra-cheap places to high-end hotels and resorts. You can definitely have a pleasant stay in a budget hotel. But even though luxury hotels cost a bit more, they also have some big perks that might be worth it.

Why stay in a luxury hotel

The easiest way to describe the difference from luxury hotels is that they offer a better overall experience from top to bottom. To be more specific, here are some of the most notable advantages that luxury hotels normally have over their more affordable counterparts:

  • Quality of the room and furniture: Luxury hotel rooms have more modern and higher quality furniture, fixtures and fittings.
  • Approvals: In-room amenities, like soaps and bathrobes, and hotel amenities, like gyms and pools, tend to be much nicer at luxury hotels.
  • To eat: Luxury hotels usually have on-site restaurants and much better dining options. Breakfast is usually served in a restaurant where you order food, instead of the buffet style at other hotels.
  • Design: Luxury hotels are much more aesthetic, from the lobby to the rooms themselves.
  • Heating and cooling: You’re more likely to get a room with its own thermostat in a luxury hotel, whereas budget hotels may only have a wall-mounted air conditioner.
  • Location: Luxury hotels are usually located in prime locations, such as right on the beach or near the finest shops and restaurants.

Some of these things make a big difference, like furniture. That’s why the argument that “you don’t travel to hang out in hotels” doesn’t hold water for me. That may be true, but you’re going to sleep there. A quality mattress, pillows and sheets are extremely important.

Even the little things add up. Better design elements, nicer soaps, a bigger pool, and all the other seemingly minor details, taken together, impact how you enjoy your stay.

Less inconvenience

People often only focus on the features of luxury hotels and budget hotels. One thing that doesn’t get as much attention is that you’re less likely to encounter inconvenience at a luxury hotel. They aim to provide a seamless experience, which means there’s less chance of frustrating issues.

I can attest to this with a first-hand example. I recently stayed at two hotels in New York, starting with a luxury hotel and ending with a more economical option. At the luxury hotel, I had no problems. There were three fast and spacious elevators, and I never waited longer than 30 seconds for one. The room was clean and everything was in perfect condition.

At the cheapest hotel I had nothing but problems. There were two cramped elevators, and to make matters worse, one of them was broken all five nights I was there. This meant that a single elevator served over 30 floors. I regularly waited for the elevator for 5-10 minutes and more than 20 minutes before leaving.

The bathroom sink in my room was partially clogged. It wasn’t enough to warrant changing rooms, but it was enough to be annoying. The saddest part was the cabinet handle, which had only been screwed on at the top, but the bottom screw was missing. It awkwardly slid out of position every time I opened it. Everything seemed cheap and I felt like I was getting the bare minimum.

Luxury has a price

All things being equal, luxury hotels would be the obvious choice. But all things are not quite equal. These hotels sometimes cost twice as much or even more per night. The question is whether jumping for an expensive hotel is worth it compared to travel more or save that money for other parts of your trip.

However, there is a great way to stay in luxury hotels without breaking the bank: pay with points. With the right travel credit cards, you can earn rewards to redeem for free hotel stays. It is possible to find amazing deals this way. For example, I paid 29,000 points per night for this luxury hotel in New York, which would otherwise have cost over $900 per night plus taxes and fees.

Another option, if you really like to travel, is to cut back on other expenses so you have more money for your travel budget. This is financial advice from Ramit Sethi that I took to heart. He recommends that you “spend extravagantly on the things you love and ruthlessly cut costs on the things you don’t”.

It’s worth it

Both luxury hotels and budget hotels can be suitable options. If you got the money, or points with the right credit card, I recommend that you go for the best option in your price range. Even though you’ll be spending a lot of time away from your hotel, there’s no overstating how nice it is to have comfortable accommodations.

My philosophy is that if I go on vacation, I want to relax and have as much fun as possible. If it means I need to spend more of my budget on a hotel, I’m happy to take that deal.

The best credit card waives interest until 2024

If you have credit card debt, transfer it to this top balance transfer card guarantees you an introductory APR of 0% for up to 21 months! Plus, you won’t pay any annual fees. These are just a few of the reasons why our experts consider this card a top choice to help you control your debt. Read our full review for free and apply in just 2 minutes.

What was once an inside secret has been shouted from the cover of every travel magazine in recent years: Croatia is one of the best beach destinations in the world.

Not only does the country offer a fascinating and layered history, but the crystal clear waters surrounding its more than 1,000 islands are ideal for swimming, sunbathing and sailing. And now, Croatia’s luxury food and hotel scenes are finally catching up with its jaw-dropping natural beauty.

From Dubrovnik (aka “the pearl of the Adriatic”) and the dreamy Dalmatian islands in the country’s southern region, to magical Rovinj on the northern peninsula of Istria, here are the most lavish hotels along Croatia’s stunning coastline.

Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik

This historic five-star villa built in 1913 offers stunning views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town from its restaurants, bars, swim platform, pools and chic rooms. Plus, its prime location puts you just a five-minute walk from the city’s historic medieval walls.

Pamper yourself at the serene spa, which overlooks the sea and features a large freshwater pool, Jacuzzis, steam bath, Roman bath and Finnish sauna.

Drop by Abakus Piano Bar – one of the best sea-view bars in town – to browse black-and-white portraits of royals, starlets and other glamorous celebrities the Excelsior has hosted over the years, including Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor.

Hotels near Bellevue Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik

Across Dubrovnik’s Old Town is Hotel Bellevue, another five-star hotel with stunning sea views. This luxury property is perched on a cliff overlooking Miramare Bay. Panoramic views of the Adriatic and private pebble beach — a rare sight on the rocky Adriatic — give guests a private, secluded feel away from the bustling activity around the city walls.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and sleek, airy interiors in tasteful neutral tones add to the serene vibe. But whenever you’re ready to explore, simply stroll to the famous Pile Gate to enter the walled city.

Lešić Dimitri Palace – Korcula

Head to the idyllic island of Korčula to visit this unique Relais & Châteaux property housed in a former 18th-century Episcopal Palace.

The historic property has just six luxury “residences” that pay homage to the island’s rich history: Marco Polo once called it his home, and the island is said to be the origin of the Silk Road. Each of the meticulously renovated 1 and 2 bedroom apartments (all with sleek modern living rooms and kitchens) are designed after stops on the Spice Route: Venice, Sumatra, Ceylon, India, China and Arabia.

Not to be missed: dinner on the terrace at LD-Restaurant – one in 10 Michelin starred restaurants in Croatia – and a private tour around the island in Lešić Dimitri’s beautiful sailboat.

Elisabeth Palace – Hvar

This elegant historical monument – a fine example of Venetian and Austrian architecture – is one of the first sights that greets you as you enter the port of Hvar. The distinctive and majestic hotel overlooks the marina and the main square. Above rises the medieval Spanish fort, which glows gold at night.

Palace Elisabeth was Hvar’s first five-star hotel, and its pedigree is indeed royal. In the 13th century, a ducal palace was built on the site. Then In 1899 it was rebuilt as Spa Hotel Empress Elisabeth, named after its patroness, the famous Empress Sisi, Elizabeth of Austria. The current name is a nod to the rich history of the property.

Dine or sip cocktails on one of the hotel’s terraces to admire the marina, nearby islands and town square, and watch Hvar go by.

D-Resort Šibenik – Šibenik

No need to worry about booking D-Resort early enough to get a room with a sea view. This modern wonder located on a small peninsula in Šibenik Bay is surrounded by water on three sides. Each of the 63 rooms, six suites, and three chic villas has a sea-view balcony to watch the sailboats and superyachts cruise past.

You can even walk on the wooden plank roof of the curved white structure, which gives the impression of being on board a large ship. It was designed by architect Nikola Bašić, who won the European Prize for Urban Public Space for his Sea Organ, a famous sound art project in Zadar.

During your stay, be sure to make the most of the pools located at the tip of the peninsula and perched above the hotel in the sleek and modern spa.

Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery – Basel

Tourists flock to Dubrovnik for the history, and to Hvar for the beaches and the party. But many make the mistake of missing the beautiful Istrian peninsula in northern Croatia.

But Meneghetti is a perfect example of the quiet allure of Istria. The Relais & Châteaux property is made up of a majestic white stone manor house and numerous outbuildings, all surrounded by hectares of vines and lush olive trees.

Book an elegantly appointed room in the main hotel. Or splurge with a 1 or 2 bedroom residence with private pool, or a 3 bedroom villa with pool and private garden overlooking the vineyards.

Dine leisurely at the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, which sources as many produce, fresh pastas, cheeses and Istrian delicacies like truffles as it can within a 50 km radius.

Grand Park Hotel Rovinj – Rovinj

There’s no better place to soak up the romantic charm of Rovinj than this sleek, state-of-the-art hotel overlooking the marina. The property offers countless views to take in Rovinj’s cafe-lined promenade, cobbled streets, and imposing bell tower punctuating the skyline.

Dive into the hotel’s impressive rooftop infinity pool. Or ask the hotel to drive you to its beach club on the small wooded island of St. Katarina, where you can swim on the pebble beach and doze under the umbrellas.

The hotel is also the site of the Michelin starred Agli Amici Rovinj restaurant, which offers sparkling views of Rovinj at night and inventive, modern Mediterranean cuisine.

If you’re not into downhill skiing and snowboarding, don’t worry because Vermont has plenty of other things to do. The state is mostly covered in cross-country and snowshoe trails, including those found at resorts like Stowe and Smugglers’ Notch. One of the coolest places to go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is probably the Trapp Family Lodge to Stowe, which has over 60 miles of trails, or the equally sprawling Craftsbury Outdoor Center at Craftbury.

Other winter experiences include horse-drawn sleigh rides (gentle giants in Stowe and Rainbow’s Edge Farm in Sutton are two solid options), dog sledding and, of course, tubing and sledding.

If you’d rather stay warm and cozy than brave the elements, take a trip to Vermont Salt Cave in Montgomery. You can start with a warm-up session in the salt cave, followed by a visit to the infrared sauna and a massage. For a sauna experience with a view, book a private session at Knownand for a more traditional spa day, head to Top notch complex to Stowe for a full day of care.

For a cozy boutique experience, book a room at The Hermitage Inna historic property that was recently renovated and offers a handful of Green Mountain adventures — from cross-country skiing and ice skating to cooking classes.

North, Woodstock Inn & Resort in the town of Woodstock offers guests lavish accommodations in a walkable (and wildly scenic) Vermont village. The property has four distinct restaurants, an expansive spa, and an activity center that helps guests get their bearings with snowshoes, fat bikes, and cross-country skis, as well as get ready for a day of downhill skiing and snowboarding nearby. Saskatchewan 6 ski station.

And finally, for an all-inclusive five-star experience, head to Twin farms at Barnard. This circa-1795 farmhouse has been transformed into a beautiful hotel where guests can enjoy farm-to-table meals and access to a spa with glass-brick steam rooms. To kick your trip up a notch, book one of the suites or cottages with stone hot tubs.

What to pack for Vermont

Winter in Vermont is all about getting outside, even when it’s near freezing. That said, you’ll want to pack your outdoor gear (think Gore-Tex shells, Casual jacketslong underwear and boots, in addition to a comfortable outfit by the fire). Don’t underestimate the power of a warm hat, wool socksand layers of clothing.

In winter, average temperatures range between 2 and 12 degrees Fahrenheit. Low temperatures coupled with relatively high humidity can make for a chilly day – especially when the skies are gray – but once you bundle up and start moving, you’ll be glad you did.

As Americans grapple with high inflation for decades and struggle to juggle bills, Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-California) campaign has spent thousands more on luxury accommodations in recent months, including in Nantucket, New York and Las Vegas.

The campaign for Swalwell, who represents a safe Democratic neighborhood in the Bay Area suburbs outside Oakland, spent $3,354 and $2,552.94 respectively on the Conrad Midtown and Loews hotels in Manhattan, according third-quarter campaign finance disclosures seen by Fox News Digital.

Swalwell for Congress also paid $1,443.94 to the Jared Coffin House Historic Hotel on the island of Massachusetts, and more than $3,000 to the five-star Santa Monica Proper Hotel in Southern California.

The campaign spent $1,388.12 at the Vdara Hotel and Spa in Sin City and $1,173.60 at the Conrad Hotel in Nashville.

Swalwell for Congress didn’t skimp on travel either, spending nearly $8,600 on 27 luxury car rides with Sunny’s Executive Sedans, $6,400 on 17 Amtrak trips and $7,500 on Just Dreaming Yacht Charters.

Rep. Eric Swalwell’s combined spending of $3.1 million this election cycle was the 87th largest among any candidate.

This is not the first time that Swalwell and his campaign spending and travel have come under scrutiny, although his office has insisted that all money was used for campaign in accordance with Federal Election Commission regulations.

Between April 1 and May 18the campaign knocked more than $62,000 off travel-related spending, including swanky hotels in the US and Paris, expensive airline flights and dozens of car rides with Uber and Lyft.

In the second quarter of last year, Swalwell – which was related to the seductive Chinese spy politician Fang Fang – spent $21,200.75 in six transactions at a California Ritz-Carlton where his wife once worked.

Earlier in the year, the 2020 presidential candidate and four other House members took $84,621.59 trip to qatar which was compensated by the US-Qatari Business Council, which is “exclusively dedicated to improving bilateral trade relations” between the nations.

Swalwell has also spent $78,419 on 156 United Airlines flights since 2020, according to public records.

Despite the apparent extravagance, Swalwell had spent just $3.1 million on the campaign trail since the start of last year, far less than dozens of other House candidates, according to FEC data.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was the top-spending candidate, losing $22.9 million this cycle, the FEC said. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, was close behind with $22.3 million.

Of the 86 candidates who have outspent Swalwell since the start of 2021, 51 were Democrats and 33 Republicans, records show.

A long-time fashion leader, Milan is a top destination for designer shopping, especially the glittering Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. However, the historic and deeply cultural city also has much to enchant. Spend a night at La Scala, one of the most famous opera houses in the world; see Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper mural, an iconic work of art housed in the Santa Maria Delle Grazie convent; sample Milanese cuisine; and visit the Gothic cathedral Duomo di Milano. We recommend visiting in spring or autumn, as winters get chilly and summers sweltering in this northern Italian enclave.

Downstairs, you can eat and drink in The Doping, an Art Deco-inspired bar that’s a treasure trove of collectibles; be sure to sample some of his imaginatively served molecular cocktails (one is hidden inside a Russian doll).
